Staci Bilbo answering an audience question as to why there have not been clinical trials in autism using tools such as minocyline to inhibit microglia.
Her answer is essentially that minocycline is effective in shutting down microglia and therefore experimentally useful, but microglia play important physiological roles in the brain, so shutting them down universally,(rather than modulating them) in the developing human brain would not be wise. However, she explains that the field is "sadly lacking in tools to modulate microglia" and suggests we need more tools. |
